DREAMERS & TPS HOLDERS NEED PERMANENT SOLUTIONS NOW

Nationwide – Today the House of Representatives voted on and passed the American Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6), led by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-NY-4), Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY-7) , and Rep. Ivette Clarke (D-NY-9), in efforts to forge forward a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and TPS holders. This legislative proposal passed the House of Representatives in 2019 but was never discussed nor voted on by the Senate. All eyes are on the Senate now to take up the conversation on addressing a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and TPS holders.

Alexandra Morales, Policy Manager of the Central American Resource Center of LA issued the following statement:

“We applaud the reintroduction of the American Dream & Promise Act that brings forth renewed momentum and reaffirms the urgent need to secure permanent legal status for DACA & for TPS holders, whose protections could end this year. The Senate must rapidly take action and pass a permanent solution for TPS holders and Dreamers. At the same time, Congress must continue to move forward all legislative vehicles in line with keeping families together and securing a pathway to citizenship for all of our immigrant communities. 

We also call on the Biden Administration to expedite actions to deliver on its promises to our immigrant communities; deportations must stop now, TPS must be redesignated to countries wrongfully terminated under the Trump Administration, and Congress must prioritize securing permanent protections for our immigrant communities. 

We applaud this moment and all of the grassroots organizing efforts of TPS holders and Dreamers who have stopped at nothing to get closer to attaining justice for their families. They have tirelessly shared their stories and organized to ensure that elected officials know who they are, know their contributions, and acknowledge the humanity that must be restored in all legislative immigration reform conversations.

As a TPS holder and as an organizer it makes me hopeful to see H.R 6 pass in the House today because it is a reminder of how much we have accomplished. Nonetheless, I am also reminded of all the work that lies ahead. The Senate must move forward with this renewed momentum and deliver permanent protection for our families. With a new Administration and with new Senators we hope the much-awaited moment for TPS holders and Dreamers can finally happen.

H.R. 6, along with other legislative proposals, are a start to achieving permanent legal status for all immigrants. There is no more time for excuses, Residency now!
