ELAC Classes Overview
CARECEN, in partnership with ELAC (East Los Angeles College), offers Central American College Courses for high school students in grades 9-12 during the Spring and Fall semesters on Saturdays. Students can earn three college units and potentially up to 10 high school credits (subject to each high school's discretion; students should consult their high school counselors). Information about the classes is disseminated to local high schools at the start of each school semester.
Course Descriptions:
031 The Central American Experience (3) UC: CSU IGETC AREA 4, 7 LECTURE, 3 HOURS. Through an interdisciplinary ethnic studies lens, this course introduces the Central American experience in the United States with emphasis on the transnational connections between the countries of origin and the communities of residence in the United States.
032 Central American Literature (3) UC:CSU IGETC Area 4C LECTURE, 3 HOURS. This course critically examines Central American literary traditions from pre-Hispanic times to the present.
033 Introduction to Central American Studies (3) UC:CSU IGETC Area 4C LECTURE, 3 HOURS. This course familiarizes students with the rich heritage of Central America and the social, economic, political, and cultural foundations of the region.
