Camila Alvarez, Esq. Appointed Legal Director at CARECEN-Los Angeles

Alvarez will lead a team of over 70 staff members who make up the legal team

Los Angeles, CA – Camila Alvarez, former Managing Attorney for the Deportation Defense Unit, was named Legal Director for The Central American Resource Center of Los Angeles.

Camila will build and execute CARECEN’s legal strategy, continue to strengthen the direct legal services, and manage and develop CARECEN's legal department. She will also work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement the organization's strategy and vision.

“Since Camila started at CARECEN, I have been impressed by her work ethic, her policy and legal knowledge, and passion to ensure our immigrant communities receive top-quality immigration services,” said Martha Arevalo, CARECEN Executive Director. “For the last 3 years, Camila’s leadership in our Deportation Defense Unit has led to many successful cases and the release of many detained individuals."

Alvarez also oversaw the expansion of CARECEN's Deportation Defense Unit and legal services department through the recent opening of CARECEN’s San Bernardino office.

"I’m convinced that at the helm of our legal team, Camila will continue the positive impact we’ve had among Central Americans and all immigrants in the greater Los Angeles area for over 30 years,” said Angela Sanbrano, CARECEN Board Chair.

"I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve," said Camila Alvarez, newly appointed CARECEN Legal Director. "CARECEN already has a powerful team committed to providing high-quality legal services to our community. I am excited to continue to work alongside them and lead the efforts to strengthen the impact and reach of our work. Though we are faced with constant attacks, the resilience of our clients and immigrant community members motivates me every day to continue in this fight."

Background: Founded in 1983, CARECEN Los Angeles is the largest Central American immigrant rights organization in the country. CARECEN Los Angeles defends and protects the human and civil rights of the immigrant community.
