CARECEN Welcomes TPS Designation for 75,000 Afghanistan Nationals

Los Angeles, CA, Earlier today, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for approximately 75,000 nationals of Afghanistan who have resided in the U.S as of March 15, 2022.

Camila Alvarez, Legal Director of the Central American Resource Center of Los Angeles Issued the Following Statement:

Today’s announcement is extremely welcomed, much needed and overdue. It is important that the United States continues to match its moral obligations to protect refugees with action. This designation, along with the recent TPS designation for Ukraine, provides hope that the Biden Administration will continue to exhaust its executive power to protect as many refugees and migrants as possible.

As an organization who has worked alongside the TPS Community since its existence, CARECEN cannot stress enough how important and how much of a lifeline TPS can be for migrant communities. President Biden must continue his progress in designating countries for TPS and also keep his promises to push for permanent protections for TPS Holders who have been in limbo for decades.
