Trump Administration Revokes Biden’s TPS Extension for Haiti

Nationwide – Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that the Trump administration partially vacates the Biden administration’s 2024 decision to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. Yesterday’s decision amends the extension and re-registration period for TPS or Haiti from 18 months to 12 months. DHS will review the 2024 extension and re-designation of TPS for Haiti and will issue a decision by June 4, 2025.

Without a new designation or extension, Haitian TPS holders stand to lose protections on August 3, 2025. Approximately 500,000 Haitians stand to be impacted by this announcement.

In response, Camila Alvarez, Co-Legal Director of CARECEN-LA, issued the following statement:

“CARECEN strongly condemns the Trump Administration’s direct attack on TPS and the Haitian community. Today’s DHS announcement marks the continuation of harmful immigration policies that prioritize political agendas over human lives. By ending Haiti’s TPS, DHS blatantly ignores the dire country conditions in Haiti.

The DHS's justification, claiming the TPS system has been “abused and exploited,” is an unfounded narrative that distorts the reality faced by TPS communities. TPS is a crucial humanitarian protection that allows people who have suffered extreme hardship to live and work safely in the U.S.

We stand in solidarity with the Haitian community. We call on the Trump administration to reverse this harmful decision and ensure that people fleeing danger are not punished for seeking safety. Temporary Protected Status must remain a tool of compassion and support, not a political pawn. We will continue to fight for the dignity, safety, and rights of immigrants.

TPS beneficiaries from Haiti will retain their TPS status until August 3, 2025. We strongly encourage Haitian TPS beneficiaries to seek individual legal advice about their options for other immigration relief and pending applications, such as Asylum. At the same time, we continue to remind TPS holders from El Salvador, Sudan, and Ukraine to continue to renew their TPS. Immigration policy is changing daily, and we must stay informed.”
