Location: Telecommute currently offered with transition to CARECEN’s Los Angeles Office

 

Job Summary

CARECEN is in search of an initiative-driven and dynamic organizing leader. This position will coordinate organizing and advocacy efforts in the areas of education equity and immigrant worker’s rights, domestic immigration policy, and refugee-related advocacy areas. The CARECEN Lead Senior Organizer will develop and implement grassroots organizing and advocacy strategies to further the organization's vision and mission. The Lead Senior Organizer will be responsible for working with the Policy Manager, organizers, community members and key stakeholders to strengthen deep community understanding of racial and immigration justice and advance CARECEN’s advocacy campaign plans. The Senior Organizer will play a critical role in helping lead and win bold campaigns at the local, state and federal levels that improve our members lives and advance immigrant justice. This is a full-time position based out of CARECEN’s Los Angeles Office with support in offsite projects including the CARECEN’s Day Labor Center and possibilities for travel to Sacramento, Washington D.C, and some travel abroad.   

 

Job Responsibilities/Essential Functions

* Collaborate with the Director of Organizing, Advocacy and Policy to coordinate the development and implementation of a strategic grassroots organizing and civic engagement agenda on priority issues for CARECEN. 

* Work closely with the Director of Organizing, Policy, and Advocacy and Policy Team to design collaborative, integrated organizing and policy advocacy strategies.

* Lead the execution of campaigns related to community political education in conjunction with key team members (i.e. root causes of migration, racial equity, immigrant rights, etc.).

* Lead in the creation of CARECEN community resources as it pertains to community education.

* Map and lead organizing base engagement strategies around key gaps and opportunities.

* Explore and identify new opportunities for leadership development, base building, and partnerships.

* Strategically engage members and partners in organizing, advocacy, leadership development efforts to develop new leadership within the immigrant justice movement.

* In collaboration with the Policy Team engage CARECEN’s base and key organizers in grassroots campaign activities (i.e., community outreach and education, legislative meetings, mobilizations, get out the vote efforts, etc.).

* Collaborate with key department team members to create intergenerational advocacy field strategies around CARECEN’s policy campaigns to elevate the voices of those directly impact in our communities.

* Lead the execution of grassroots outreach plans to further the organizing programmatic and campaign goals to bridge CARECEN’s policy agenda to strategic field tactics.

* Build partnerships with key organizations and stakeholders in existing and new projects

* Develop and maintain partnerships with local, state, national, and transnational alliances in key areas related to CARECEN’s organizing and advocacy priorities.

* Support in strengthening relationships with external groups and coalitions that align with CARECEN’s organizing and advocacy goals.

* Serve are liaison of CARECEN-led coalition spaces to convene advocacy partners, brief allies, and provide members and other stakeholders with timely tools, resources, and technical assistance as needed to mobilize around key moments and advocacy projects.

* Help build an organizing team and base culture that is innovative, hungry to learn, and inspired to fight to defend and transform for immigrant justice.

* In collaboration with Director of Organizing, Policy, and Advocacy and Polity Team Create, track, and communicate the collaborative’s goals, timelines, and deliverables for campaigns and initiatives.

* Support the design and implementation of quantitative and qualitative evaluation and reporting tools.

* In coordination with the Communication Manager support drafting of immunity engagement advocacy toolkits and other media engagements to advance CARECEN’s organizing, policy and advocacy agenda, inform the community of policy updates, and encourage community engagement.

* Represent CARECEN in local, state and national coalitions, media engagement and other efforts as needed.

* Supervise consultants, staff, and interns/fellows as needed in working closely with the Director of Organizing, Policy, and Advocacy as needed.

* Support the Organizing, Advocacy and Policy Department in other efforts such as migrant rapid response efforts as needed.

* Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Required Skill/Qualifications

*  Bachelor's degree in social sciences or a related field 

* At least 4 years of experience in advocacy and the organizing field at various levels required 

* Experience working with directly impacted immigrant and refugee communities

* Experience in movement organizing and implementing advocacy strategies 

* Deeply committed to racial justice and immigrants’ rights, and eager to engage partners and allies to expand support for immigrant communities

* Comfortable and experienced in fast-paced environment and handling multiple deadlines 

* Strong research and writing skills to be able to learn, research, and communicate complex advocacy issue areas in a fast-paced environment   

* Must have the ability to plan, organize, and exercise good judgment with limited supervision to implement CARECEN’s policy and campaign plans

* Bilingual and fluent (speaking and writing) in English and Spanish 

* Deep understanding of the current immigration political landscape - local, state, national

Work Schedule

CARECEN office hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday, weekends, and evenings. The work schedule for this position is a 35-hour workweek equaling 7-hour workdays. The position will require work on Saturdays; thus, an alternative schedule will be created and agreed upon. Flexible work from home schedules may be offered. Work is performed in a variety of work settings, including CARECEN’s offices, workspace provided by others, libraries, and other government facilities, among others. 

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment. The position requires the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary. Work is performed in a variety of work settings, including a hybrid office and work from home model depending on COVID-19 office policy, CARECEN’s offices, workspace provided by others including community libraries and other government facilities, among others.

 

Travel Requirements

Ability to travel to CARECEN offices, other off-site locations, and with possibilities for travel to Sacramento, Washington D.C., Mileage reimbursement is available. Ability to drive with a valid CA license and a registered vehicle is preferred.
