Deportation Defense Unit
CARECEN’s Deportation Defense Unit (DDU) represents clients throughout their removal proceedings. Originally the Unaccompanied Minor Representation Project, CARECEN’s Deportation Defense Unit formed in June 2018 after increasing our expertise to include large-scale representation of adults and detainees in removal proceedings.
Individuals facing deportation in the immigration court have a right to an attorney but are not provided an attorney by the government. CARECEN’s goal is for every individual who faces removal proceedings to have access to pro bono, zealous representation. We are committed to increasing the amount of pro bono removal defense attorneys available to fight for the vulnerable immigrant community in immigration court.
The DDU represents over 300 unaccompanied minors who have fled violence in their home countries and are now in the United States fighting their removal defense cases. Our attorneys and staff provide legal representation and support throughout every step of a child’s case. We attend every court hearing and apply for every form of relief for which a child qualifies. We are committed to providing universal representation, meaning we do not screen clients for strength of relief and provide zealous representation through every step of the case.
If you would like to make a referral for an unaccompanied minor, please contact Diego Lopez at (213) 385-7800 ext. 219 or [email protected].
Released Adult and Refugee Families
CARECEN provides representation to adults and refugee families in their removal defense cases, including families that were subject to the Zero Tolerance/Family Separation policy. CARECEN represents over 50 adults and families facing deportation proceedings. CARECEN attorneys fight for our clients every step of the way.
