CARECEN-LA Welcomes Dismissal of Federal Charges Against SEIU-USWW President David Huerta

Los Angeles, CA — Earlier this week, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California announced its intention to dismiss the federal charges against SEIU-USWW President David Huerta. On June 6, 2025, Huerta stood in solidarity with immigrant workers during an ICE operation in Los Angeles' Garment District. He was charged with interfering with federal officers while exercising his constitutional right of freedom of speech.

Martha Arévalo, Executive Director of CARECEN-LA, issued the following statement:

"David Huerta is a fearless leader and unwavering ally of immigrant communities and workers. He should never have been subjected to this unjust and politically motivated attempt to silence his voice. We are relieved and grateful that this case, which should never have happened in the first place, is finally coming to an end. Given this administration's continued use of force against immigrants and those who stand in solidarity with them, we are especially grateful to have David with us today.

As relieving as this news is, it is also deeply frustrating and frightening to see the lengths this government is willing to go to advance its hateful agenda. What happened to David could happen to any labor leader, organizer, community advocate, or person of color who stands up for justice. We cannot normalize these attacks, and we will not be silenced."
