Trump's Second Presidency Begins with a Vengeance, Fueled by Hate and Violations of the US Constitution
Los Angeles, CA – This week, President Donald Trump was sworn in for a second term as the 47th President of the United States. On his first day, the President signed nearly 100 executive orders, issued pardons for January 6th rioters, and withdrew the U.S. from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement. Among these actions were numerous orders targeting immigration policies, including:
- Mass Deportations:
- Increasing ICE Enforcement and Penalizing Sanctuary Cities
- Increased Use of Immigration Detention
- Ending Asylum and Suspending Entry into the U.S
- Declaring a National Emergency at the Southern Border:
- Deploying Military Forces to the Southern Border
- Suspending Refugee Admissions
- Reinstating the Remain in Mexico Policy
- Rescinding the Executive Order on Establishment of the Task Force on the Reunification of Families
In response, the Central American Resource Center of Los Angeles Has issued The Following Statement:
“Yesterday, in a disturbing display of abuse of power and bigotry, the 47th President of the United States signed nearly 100 executive orders aimed at instilling fear in marginalized communities.” Said Martha Arevalo, CARECEN-LA Executive Director. “Among the many attacks were measures targeting asylum seekers, including the suspension of the CBP One app leading to a cancellation of appointments, curtailing asylum rights. Additionally, an executive order sought to end birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented parents, while other orders ramped up border security, challenged sanctuary cities, and reinstated the harmful 'Remain in Mexico' policy. While they attempt to overwhelm us, we must remain vigilant, informed, and organized.”
“As what we anticipated begins to take shape, we encourage community members to continue to stay informed and exercise their rights”. Said Camila Alvarez, CARECEN-LA Legal Director “This Thursday, we will host a 'Stay Informed, Stay Protected: Know Your Rights' information session at our main office. The English session will begin at 5:30 PM, followed by the Spanish session at 6:00 PM.
While we finalize details on CARECEN legal services for TPS re-registrations for El Salvador, Venezuela, Ukraine, and Sudan, we encourage you to stay tuned to our social media and website. We encourage recipients to renew TPS and DACA as soon as possible, especially given the many changes in immigration policy currently unfolding. Together, we must remain informed, prepared, and united to protect our communities and stand against these relentless attacks on our rights and dignity”
