CARECEN-LA Condemns Passage of the Laken Riley Act

Los Angeles, CA – Today, President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law requiring the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain undocumented migrants who have been arrested, charged with, convicted of, or admit having committed offenses, including theft, shoplifting, burglary, assault against a law enforcement officer, or any crime that causes death or serious bodily injury.

In Response, the Central American Resource Center Issued the Following Statement:

“The purpose of the Laken Riley Act at its core is about furthering a racist and xenophobic agenda. It is not about making our communities safer. This legislation goes against our core values, and we must stand united in the fight for civil rights and justice for our immigrant communities. This policy would further criminalize and marginalize communities, accelerate deportations, and detain migrants on the basis of accusations and profiling.

We call on our representatives at every level of government to stand with our community and defend due process and civil rights for all.”
