Los Angeles — This past weekend in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, was shot and killed by federal immigration agents during a demonstration. Footage shows he was holding a phone and helping others who had been pushed to the ground by agents when he was forcibly subdued and then shot. This comes just weeks after the fatal shooting of Renée Nicole Good by an ICE agent earlier this month, and over 40 deaths at the hands of federal agents in the past year.
In response the Central American Resource Center of Los Angeles issued the following statement:
Another life was taken by federal agents in Minneapolis amid weeks of escalating attacks on immigrant communities. We unequivocally condemn the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and dedicated caregiver, who was shot and killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026. These murders and violence must stop.
Just last week, the country witnessed the detention of a five-year-old child who was allegedly used as bait to capture his father. Our nation is facing a moment of profound crisis. We are witnessing a level of chaos in which no one is truly safe, not children, not U.S. citizens, not communities of color. Fundamental rights are under direct threat, including the freedom of speech and the right to speak up against this administration’s violence. This trajectory is dangerous, and it cannot continue.
CARECEN-LA calls for the resignation of Kristi Noem and the removal of Gregory Bovino, and Tom Homan. The Department of Homeland Security, Congress, and the White House must confront the grave consequences of their actions. We cannot continue to accept false excuses for the taking of human life, nor the narratives used to justify state violence and advance racist political agendas. We call on Congress to abolish ICE and military-style resources that are weaponized to terrorize our communities.
Our hearts go out to all those who have lost loved ones to this violence. This must stop. We must stand together to demand accountability, defend our communities, and ensure no more lives are taken.
