Los Angeles, CA - Yesterday, a Texas federal judge ruled against Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), stating it is unlawful. However, the decision leaves the door open for the possibility of an appeal at the Firth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. For now, those with DACA will continue to keep their status and remain eligible to renew. No new DACA applications will be processed at this time.
In Response, Camila Alvarez, Legal Director of the Central American Resource Center Has, Issued the following Statement:
Yesterday, Judge Hanen ruled that the DACA Final Rule is unlawful. It is disheartening and infuriating to read another negative decision from Judge Hanen on the DACA program. Ultimately, current DACA recipients may continue to renew their DACA status; however, DHS may not process any initial DACA applications.
We continue to urge President Biden and Congress to move forward with permanent protections and maximize every tool available to the Legislative and Executive branches to protect DACA holders and all immigrant communities.
CARECEN maintains its commitment to providing free DACA legal services. We invite members of our community to tune in to our social media spaces for the most updated information and answers to the most frequently asked questions.
