Breaking: Trump Administration Terminates TPS Designation for Venezuela

Nationwide- Days after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revoked the Biden administration’s 2025 extension of TPS for 600,000 Venezuelans, the Trump administration announced that it is terminating the 2023 TPS designation for Venezuela, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without work authorization and at risk of deportation.

Today’s termination announcement is for Venezuelan nationals who obtained TPS in 2023. TPS protections are set to terminate 60 days from publication of the termination in the Federal Register Notice, which is set to be published on February 5, 2025. This means that TPS protections for Venezuelans under the 2023 designation are tentatively set to end on April 6, 2025.

This termination announcement does not apply to Venezuelans granted TPS in September 2021, who as of now will have protections until September 10, 2025.

In response, Camila Alvarez, Co-Legal Director of CARECEN-LA, issued the following statement:

“CARECEN denounces the termination of TPS protections for Venezuelans. This Administration continues to strip vulnerable people of protection. CARECEN stands with the Venezuelan community and will continue to advocate and provide services for TPS beneficiaries and all immigrant communities.

For now, we strongly advise TPS Beneficiaries from Venezuela NOT to re-register for TPS. We encourage all Venezuelan TPS beneficiaries to seek individual legal advice about their options for other immigration relief and pending applications, such as Asylum. We encourage TPS beneficiaries from El Salvador, Sudan, and Ukraine, to continue to re-register for TPS during the 60-day re-registration period for their country. Immigration policy is changing frequently, and we must stay informed, vigilant, and ready to protect ourselves and our community.”
