Nationwide – Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Biden Administration announced the extensions of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador, Venezuela, Ukraine and Sudan. The extensions will provide work permits and protection from deportation for the next 18 months. However, there has currently been no mention of extensions of TPS for Nicaraguans and Hondurans, whose protections are set to expire June 2025.
TPS protections extended for each country:
- El Salvador now runs through September 9, 2026;
- Venezuela now runs through October 2, 2026
- Ukraine now runs through October 19, 2026
- Sudan now runs through October 19, 2026
In Response Staff Members of the Central American Resource Center Issued the Following Statement:
“As a Salvadoran TPS holder who participated in a hunger strike in Washington, D.C., during the holidays urging the Biden Administration to redesignate TPS for all countries, it is a sense of relief that my TPS protections have been extended, as well as for nationals from Venezuela, Ukraine, and Sudan," said Lorena Zepeda, a TPS holder from El Salvador. “We urge the Biden Administration to act swiftly to renew TPS for more eligible countries, like our brothers and sisters from Honduras and Nicaragua, and to take bolder action to provide permanent protection to as many families as possible
“In these times of uncertainty for immigrants in the United States, we welcome the decision to extend TPS for El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine and Venezuela” said Camila Alvarez, CARECEN-LA, Co-Legal Director “We urge the Biden Administration to continue to extend and designate TPS for other Central American and all eligible countries. We demand that the Biden administration do everything possible to protect the immigrant community, strengthen and defend the TPS program, and create pathways to permanent residency for TPS holders and all immigrant communities before the transition of power.
While we await the publication of the Federal Register Notice, CARECEN urges TPS holders to remain vigilant against immigration fraud, particularly from notarios charging fees for renewal services. All TPS holders from the countries that were extended will maintain their TPS status and work authorization through the current termination date for their country. TPS holders must re-register by the deadline for their country to continue their TPS status and work authorization. We will provide updates in the coming days on what to expect and how to access our legal services. We will be hosting an information session “charla” at our main office on Tuesday, January 15, 2024, at 5:30 pm.”
