CARECEN-LA Condemns Proposed Senate Bill's Assault on Immigration

After months of back-and-forth negotiations, the United States Senate has released the language of the Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024. This proposed bill would significantly impact the immigrant landscape with $20.23 billion going towards expanding detention centers, border closures, conducting massive deportations, denying due process and further targeting the US asylum process. In exchange, this would provide additional funds for the ongoing conflicts in the Ukraine and Israel.

In Response Martha Arevalo, Executive Director of CARECEN-LA issued the Following Statement:

“We often find ourselves repeating the same thing over and over again: THE LIVES OF MIGRANTS SHOULD NOT BE USED AS POLITICAL PAWNS.  This bill stands in stark contrast to what we urged Congress to do, as it has failed to pass any measures that would benefit the immigrant community. It is also crucial to mention that the current administration has consistently demonstrated unfulfilled commitments regarding immigration, choosing a different path and persisting in attacks on the immigrant community, much like the previous administration. The proposed bill does nothing but advance an agenda of hate and endanger the lives of recently arrived immigrants.

As the Central American Resource Center of Los Angeles we call on our members of congress to vote “NO” on this absurd attack on our immigration system.”
