Restore Day Labor Center Funding Campaign

 DLC1lr.jpg

This is a city-wide campaign to secure long-term funding from the City of Los Angeles for seven local day labor centers.

The CARECEN Day Labor Center connects day laborers, who are often immigrants without status, with employers in construction, landscaping, and the trades. It provides support for the laborers, advocating for them with employers, guaranteeing a minimum wage, and providing education, health, and organizing information.

The center, which has been operating at 1675 Wilshire Blvd. since 2004, has long been one of several day labor centers in Los Angeles that together received approximately $1 million in federal community development grants distributed through City Hall.

In 2014, federal funding rules restricted the money that helped keep these centers open, and some were forced to close. Emergency funding from City Hall allowed the centers to stay open through the end of June, but the money set aside for the centers was drastically reduced the following year. Negotiations with the city continue, and this campaign is part of the effort to restore the previous level of funding.
