Job Summary
CARECEN is in search of an initiative-driven and dynamic organizer. This position will be responsible for supporting community education and outreach and building a grassroots base of community members to support organizing and advocacy efforts in the areas of education equity and immigrant workers’ rights, domestic immigration policy, and refugee-related advocacy areas. The organizer will implement grassroots organizing, civic engagement, and advocacy strategies to further the organization's vision and mission. The organizer will work with the policy manager, organizers, community members and key stakeholders to strengthen deep community understanding of racial and immigration justice and advance CARECEN’s advocacy campaign plans. The organizer will play a critical role in helping lead and win bold campaigns hand in hand with our community at the local, state, and federal levels that improve our members' lives and advance immigrant justice. This is a full-time position based out of CARECEN’s Los Angeles Office with possibilities for travel to Sacramento and Washington D.C.
Job Responsibilities/Essential Duties
- Collaborate with the director of Organizing, Advocacy and Policy Department and senior organizers on the implementation of grassroots organizing and advocacy strategies on priority issues for CARECEN
- Contribute to the creation of CARECEN community resources in line with community outreach and education goals
- Collaborate on and implement organizing base engagement and community power building strategies around key gaps and opportunities
- Support leadership development, base building, and partnerships
- Support community outreach strategies (i.e., Making calls, flyering, convening community charlas, etc.)
- Strategically engage members and partners in organizing, advocacy, leadership development and civic engagement efforts to develop new leadership within the immigrant justice movement
- In collaboration with the Policy Team, engage CARECEN’s base and key organizers in grassroots campaign activities (i.e., community outreach and education, legislative meetings, mobilizations, etc.).
- Collaborate with key department team members to elevate the voices of those directly impact in our communities as part of CARECEN’s policy campaigns
- Support the execution of grassroots outreach plans to further the organizing programmatic and campaign goals that bridge CARECEN’s policy agenda to strategic field tactics
- Support the execution of campaigns related to community political education in conjunction with key team members (i.e. root causes of migration, racial equity, immigrant rights, etc.)
- Support the department’s rapid response efforts as needed
- Support relationship building and collaborations with key partners and stakeholders
- In collaboration with the Organizing, Policy, and Advocacy Team create, track, and communicate the collaborative’s goals, timelines, and report deliverables for campaigns and initiatives
- In coordination with the communication manager support the implementation of advocacy toolkits and other media engagements to advance CARECEN’s organizing, policy and advocacy agenda, inform the community of policy updates, and encourage community engagement
- Develop and facilitate meeting agendas and community meetings
- Organize events and meetings logistics
- Represent CARECEN in local, state and national coalitions, media engagement and other efforts as needed
- Work with and support volunteers, interns/fellows as needed
- Support the Organizing, Advocacy and Policy Department in other efforts as needed
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
- Required Skill/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or experience equivalency
- At least 1 year of experience in community engagement
- Experience working with directly impacted immigrant and refugee communities
- Experience in movement organizing and implementing advocacy strategies
- Deeply committed to racial justice and immigrants’ rights, and eager to engage partners and allies to expand support for immigrant communities
- Comfortable and experienced in fast-paced environment and handling multiple deadlines
- Strong research and writing skills to be able to learn, research, and communicate complex advocacy issue areas in a fast-paced environment
- Must have the ability to plan, organize, and exercise good judgment with limited supervision to implement CARECEN’s policy plan
- Bilingual and fluent (speaking and writing) in English and Spanish
- Be available some evenings and weekends
- Deep understanding of the current immigration political landscape - local, state, national
Classification & Work Schedule
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Office hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday, flexibility required based on the needs of the organization. The normal workweek for this position is 35 hours, equaling 7-hour workdays. Responsibilities may require working evenings and some weekends. The position is part of the bargaining unit represented by the union.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This position operates in a professional office environment and in the field for community activities. The position requires the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.
Travel Requirements
Ability to travel to CARECEN offices, other off-site locations, and with possibilities for travel to Sacramento, Washington D.C,. Mileage reimbursement is available. Ability to drive with a valid CA license and a registered vehicle is preferred.
