CARECEN Denounces Attack on Reproductive & Civil Rights Following the Overturning of Roe v Wade

Nationwide- Today, Friday, June 24th, 2022, in a 6-3 vote, the United States Supreme Court voted to end the federal protections on abortion 50 years after the ruling in Roe v. Wade, leaving it for states to decide the legality of abortion access.

The Central American Resource Center of Los Angeles denounces this attack on the reproductive rights of women and all people who seek access to safe abortion. Today’s SCOTUS decision also sets a dangerous precedent to further erode the rights to privacy, bodily autonomy, and the civil rights for women and all people seeking access to safe abortion.

Staff Members of the Central American Resource Center - Los Angeles Have Issued the Following Statements:

“The alarms are ringing and our country has taken decades of steps back. The Supreme Court has reaffirmed that basic civil and human rights are a target. Today, tomorrow, and always, we must support all human and civil rights. We must protect reproductive rights and fight for all people to have autonomy over their own bodies. Lawmakers thought this decision would never be overturned, but it is clear that the U.S. Supreme Court will not protect civil and human rights. Congress must act to protect reproductive rights and protect all basic human and civil rights as we anticipate that there are more attacks to come on the rights of marginalized communities.” - Camila Alvarez, CARECEN-LA, Legal Director

“Today’s decision to overturn Roe vs.Wade will have substantial consequences for communities across this country, but especially for historically marginalized communities including women of color, low-income people, and immigrants who already lack resources and access to healthcare. We cannot forget about the additional risks and danger to immigrant and undocumented women.” - Joana Reyes, CARECEN-LA, Policy Manager
