CARECEN-LA Applauds the Biden-Harris Administration for Bold Immigration Reform Proposals On Day One

President Joe Biden & Vice President Kamala Harris Have been Sworn in as President & Vice President of the United States and Are Ready to Work

Nationwide – This morning, President Joe Biden & Vice President Kamala Harris were officially sworn into office months after a highly contested election that saw false claims of voter fraud, an armed assault on the nation’s capital, and a growing threat to democratic values. One of this administration’s first actions was to issue legislation to modernize and address the US immigration system

Today’s proposals focus on both a series of Executive Orders and legislative proposals.  We urge the new Administration to stay on course and work with immigrant rights organizations, leaders, and communities to ensure we have reforms that focus on family unity and justice. Immigrant rights organizations and communities will continue to fight until we reach and deliver the promise of just immigration reforms and protections.

Martha Arevalo, Executive Director of the Central American Resource Center of LA issued the following statement:

“This is a historic moment for our communities and for our country. This victory is made possible because of the hard work by communities of color throughout the country who voted in record numbers and fought for democracy.”

“Immigrants are essential to the foundation of this nation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our communities have kept us alive – and at great cost. We celebrate immigrant families and their struggle.”

“It is time to turn a page and hold all elected officials accountable. We are excited at the prospect of strong executive orders and legislative proposals that center around family reunification and protecting the most vulnerable. But, there is still work to be done.”

“Central America and Central Americans understand the root causes of migration and know that while domestic fixes are a start, the administration must understand the root causes of migration and undo the inhumane foreign policies that perpetuate these issues.”

“In addition, we urge the Biden-Harris Administration to immediately end harmful asylum laws and repression at the border against refugees. We must become a country that protects the vulnerable, not turns them away.”

“We will continue to defend immigrant families and look forward to working with the Biden-Harris Administration and the new Congress to find just and permanent solutions for immigrant families.”
