The Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) is seeking to hire a full-time, bilingual (Spanish/English) immigration attorney in our Van Nuys office who will represent clients before USCIS, the asylum office, EOIR, and other forms of relief as needed. This is a full time position based in CARECEN’s San Fernando Valley Office.
CARECEN was founded in 1983 by Salvadoran refugees and other human rights activists who worked to secure legal status for the thousands of Central Americans fleeing civil war. Today, CARECEN’s mission is to promote the human and civil rights of Central Americans and other immigrant communities through legal and educational services, and by advocating and organizing to transform immigration and education policies. As such, CARECEN is committed to coordinating a community response to serve the needs of unaccompanied minors who are fleeing to the United States from violence in Central America.
CARECEN’s Legal Department offers a dynamic work environment for passionate, social justiceoriented advocates. Our legal program provides direct legal representation to thousands of clients each year seeking family-based immigration assistance, citizenship, asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), VAWA, T and U visas, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Temporary Protected Status, NACARA, and other relief, both affirmatively and in immigration court. In addition to direct representation, CARECEN engages in advocacy at the local and national levels on the issues of immigration reform, combating notario fraud, and advocating for the legal and non-legal needs of the immigrant community.
The Staff Attorney provides direct legal services to clients in various immigration matters, including U Visas/VAWAs, Naturalization, Family Based Petitions, DACA applications and other relief. The Staff Attorney will work under the supervision of the Managing Attorney and handle all aspects of a client’s case, including representation at interviews/court and appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals if necessary. The Staff Attorney will assist in reviewing applications, participating in naturalization fairs, and in community outreach and education events, including on some evenings and weekends. The Staff Attorney will assist in coordinating referrals for medical, mental health or educational services for clients, as necessary.
