In El Salvador, ASPIDH Arco Iris Trans is one of very few organizations that advocate for the rights of transgendered women. As they go through their transition, they face unimaginable discrimination from family, government officials, and a society that generally doesn’t understand their concerns or recognize their status as transgender people. They are denied everything from basic identification documents to employment, essentially rendered non-persons in the country of their birth.
Theirs is a similar struggle as that of the trans community in the United States, but whereas trans people here are beginning to develop awareness and understanding, in El Salvador such a conversation isn’t even happening.
The women of ASPIDH Arco Iris Trans fight every day to legitimize who they are and seek allies for their cause. This event is an opportunity for them to tell their stories and for our friends in the Latino and immigrant community in Los Angeles, who face similar daily struggles, to grant them essential emotional and financial support. Please join us for an evening of solidarity and fun as we get to know these LUCHADORAS!
