Supervising Attorney

The Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) is seeking to hire a full-time, bilingual (Spanish/English) immigration attorney to supervise legal services in its main Los Angeles office location as well as its off-site locations, as needed.



CARECEN was founded in 1983 by Salvadoran refugees and other human rights activists who worked to secure legal status for the thousands of Central Americans fleeing civil war. Today, CARECEN’s mission is to promote the human and civil rights of Central Americans and other immigrant communities through legal and educational services, and by advocating and organizing to transform immigration and education policies.


The CARECEN Legal Department is currently staffed by eighteen attorneys and three BIA-accredited representatives, as well as several paralegals and support staff. The legal department provides direct legal representation to thousands of clients each year seeking family-based immigration assistance, citizenship, asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, VAWA, T and U visas, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Temporary Protected Status, NACARA, as well as representation in immigration court. CARECEN seeks an experienced attorney to supervise legal services at its Los Angeles office location as well as various off-site locations, as needed.


JOB DESCRIPTION:  Los Angeles Supervising Attorney


The Supervising Attorney of the Los Angeles Office is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations, personnel, and legal service provision at the Los Angeles location. The Supervising Attorney works directly under the Managing Attorney and will assist the Managing Attorney in overseeing the department and other tasks as needed.  The Supervising Attorney is also responsible for outreach and community education activities as well as supporting CARECEN’s policy advocacy efforts.


Summary of Duties:

  • Supervise legal staff at the Los Angeles office. Monitor timesheets, caseloads, plan and conduct legal case review, as well as trainings and other professional development activities for staff;
  • Conduct periodic written & performance evaluation for legal staff;
  • Provide individual consultations (at the LA Office or other off-site locations, as needed), prepare cases, represent applicants before DHS, in Immigration Court and on appeal;
  • Conduct presentations, community education activities and respond to media requests on relevant immigration issues;
  • Participate in policy advocacy on immigration issues relevant to CARECEN’s mission;
  • Develop relationships with local CBOs, law schools, foundations, government and other organizations;
  • Facilitate legal meetings when Managing Attorney or Legal Director is unavailable.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Managing Attorney or Legal Director.




  • Law degree and active admission to the bar of any state (California preferred);
  • Excellent legal skills and broad knowledge of immigration law. 3-4 years of substantive immigration law experience strongly preferred;
  • Experience supervising support staff;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and goals of CARECEN;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Commitment to working in a diverse working environment;
  • Ability to develop and implement innovative models of service delivery with limited resources and leverage other community resources;
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse groups of individuals, including representatives of government, foundations, English/Spanish media, and other grassroots organizations;
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently;
  • Must have a car and driver license, and must be willing to conduct community education/workshops and travel to various off-site locations around Los Angeles. The position will involve some evening and weekend work.
